MEET OUR DC FAMILY FORUM SPEAKERS – DR. SALPEKAR
In this series, we will introduce you to the experts inside and outside of the HH community who will be presenting at the DC Family Forum on December 3rd.
Please meet Dr. Jay Salpekar, an internationally renowned physician and scholar in the field of neuropsychiatry. Dr. Salpekar is the Director of the Neuropsychiatry in Epilepsy Program at Kennedy Krieger Institute, and on the full time Neurology and Psychiatry Faculty of Johns Hopkins University Medical School. The Neuropsychiatry in Epilepsy Program at Kennedy Krieger Institute is a specialty program for children and adolescents with behavioral complications associated with epilepsy. Kennedy Krieger’s program is unique because of its highly specialized approach, combining neurology and psychiatry to address mental health problems that may co-occur with seizure disorders.
Dr. Salpekar’s recent research includes:
- Identifying seizure localization or seizure types that may be more likely associated with neuropsychiatric conditions
- Exploring treatment options available to persons with epilepsy and neuropsychiatric comorbidity
Also, Dr. Salpekar co-wrote the chapter in the recently published Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery book on “Psychosocial Outcomes Following Seizure Surgery” where he advocates for studies following surgery measuring behavior, social competence, and quality of life for epilepsy patients.
Dr. Salpekar will be presenting on HH & Psychiatric Co-Morbidities & Behavior. Hope for HH understands psychiatric co-morbidities including rages, aggression, anxiety and other behaviors are HUGE issues for our families.
Specialty Training & Background
Dr. Salpekar has A.B. and M.D. degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, and completed an internship and residency in general psychiatry at Barnes Hospital. He then completed a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at the Yale University Child Study Center. Dr. Salpekar has been an academic physician and scholar for nearly two decades, and is currently involved in national and international clinical and research collaborations in neuropsychiatry.
Where He is Today
Dr. Jay Salpekar is a pediatric Neuropsychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Neuropsychiatry in Epilepsy Program at Kennedy Krieger Institute. He is also an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Other Leadership
Dr. Salpekar is involved as a professional advisor for the Epilepsy Foundation and is a fellow of the American Neuropsychiatric Association
Outside of work Passions
When Dr. Salpekar is not working, his passions include soccer and Indian cooking!
