Hope for HH is excited to announce our 2017 Family Forum in our nation’s capitol, Washington DC. The DC Family Forum welcomes all patients, caregivers and families touched by HH to join together for information, support, and community. This year’s Forum will include a brief update on the latest in HH treatment and research but will focus on managing HH with interactive dialogues with national experts on cognition, behavior challenges, endocrine issues, transitions and more. The schedule and our esteemed speakers are listed below.
Early December is also a great time to visit Washington, DC (after Thanksgiving and before the winter holiday rush) and most museums and attractions are free. We encourage families to plan time to visit The White House, The Capitol, The Smithsonian Museum, the National Zoo, and many other one-of-a-kind sites. Most museums you can visit at your leisure, but some like the White House and Capitol require advance planning and tickets even though the cost is free. We will give you plenty of tips to maximize your time while in DC.
The Forum has been planned in conjunction with the annual American Epilepsy Society (AES) meeting also occurring this year in Washington DC. Epilepsy medical professionals from around the world travel for this meeting each year. Some presentations are available to the public for free (eg The Hoyer Lecture on Friday afternoon). Anyone can participate in the meeting for a day or in its entirety for a fee.
Accommodations have been reserved at an all suite hotel that includes breakfast and complimentary evening reception. The hotel also has an indoor pool and gym. We have secured a truly incredible rate for Friday, Saturday & Sunday evening. The hotel may be able to extend the rate for additional dates as availability permits. Given the popularity of travel to DC during the holiday season, rooms will fill fast. Guests are encouraged to book rooms NOW.
The Family Forum includes 2 meals, coffee breaks, and family care packages. It also includes RN and volunteer supervised babysitting for HH children and adults, as well as siblings. The babysitting room and meeting rooms are adjacent for easy check in on your loved ones. There will be a small registration fee to help defray these costs.
To help you plan your visit to the Family Forum, as well as AES (optional) and Washington DC, the Forum schedule is below.
The Forum will “kick off” on Saturday, Dec. 2 evening from 5-9 PM with a welcome dinner and social. This is time for families to get acquainted, socialize, and relax. Families who choose to arrive Friday or Saturday morning will have time to explore DC and attend presentations at AES.
On Sunday, Dec. 3 the Forum will continue with a day of learning and dialogue from 8:30 – 4 PM. Lunch and coffee breaks are included. Supervised care and babysitting will be provided so adults can focus on the information and discussion.
