If We Can Create an Animal Model for HH We Will Significantly Improve Our Understanding of the Condition and the Best Interventions
The search for new treatments for the seizures and cognitive deficits resulting from hypothalamic hamartomas has been hindered by a complete lack of animal models of this condition. The research proposed here hopes to facilitate therapy discovery by generating a new and innovative animal model of hypothalamic hamartoma. Hope for HH is pleased to have funded a research grant to Drs. Karen Wilcox and Peter West at the Anticonvulsant Drug Development Program at University of Utah to "generate a novel rat model of HH."

Karen S. Wilcox, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Director of the Anticonvulsant Drug Development Program at the University of Utah. Her laboratory has expertise in developing animal models of refractory epilepsy and is interested in understanding the basic mechanisms underlying seizure generation.
Peter J. West, Ph.D., is a Research Assistant Professor in the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department, and a Co-Investigator in the Anticonvulsant Drug Development Program, at the University of Utah. Dr. West specializes in the use of electrophysiological techniques to study investigational treatments for seizures and cognitive comorbidities observed in epilepsy.
